Tom McMahon

Tom McMahon enters his third season as the Las Vegas Raiders' special teams coordinator in 2024. With over 32 years of coaching experience, including 17 seasons in the NFL, McMahon has established himself as one of the league's top special teams coaches. His units have consistently delivered record-breaking performances and Pro Bowl selections across multiple teams. In 2023, McMahon's special teams unit led the NFL with a 45.1 net punting average, the best in Raiders history since 1976. The punt team downed 45.3% of punts inside the 20-yard line, ranking fifth in the league. Under McMahon's guidance, P AJ Cole earned his third straight Pro Bowl selection, second AP First-Team All-Pro honor, and second PFWA All-NFL Team selection, averaging a league-leading and Raiders-record 45.1 net yards per punt. Cole also set an NFL single-game record with 63.6 yards per punt in Week 9. WR DeAndre Carter averaged 9.7 yards per punt return, tied for 11th in the NFL and the sixth-best by a Raiders returner since 2000. In his first season with the Raiders in 2022, McMahon's unit produced two Pro Bowl selections with K Daniel Carlson and P AJ Cole. Carlson broke an NFL record with 11 field goals of 50+ yards and ranked second in field goal percentage (91.9). Cole finished fifth in the NFL in yards per punt (48.8) and ranked second in percentage of punts downed inside the 5-yard line (8.5%). The special teams unit also allowed only 20.1 yards per kick return, the second-lowest in the NFL.

McMahon is a 32-year coaching veteran who has coached at the NFL level for the past 17 seasons. Before joining the Raiders, he served as special teams coordinator for the Denver Broncos (2018-21), Indianapolis Colts (2013-17), Kansas City Chiefs (2012), and St. Louis Rams (2009-11). Over his NFL career, McMahon has coached seven players to Pro Bowl selections: P AJ Cole (2022-23), K Daniel Carlson (2022), P Dustin Colquitt (2012), LS Matt Overton (2013), K Adam Vinatieri (2014), P Pat McAfee (2014, 2016), and LS Casey Kreiter (2018). His units have consistently set records, including the Raiders in 2023 (63.6-yard single-game gross punting average by AJ Cole) and 2022 (NFL single-season record of 11 50+ yard field goals by Daniel Carlson). While with the Broncos, K Brandon McManus tied an NFL single-season record with 10 50+ yard field goals in 2020. McMahon’s Colts units (2013-17) ranked in the NFL’s top five in field goal percentage, net punting average, gross punting average, and kickoff return average. Notably, Adam Vinatieri set an NFL record with 44 consecutive made field goals during McMahon’s tenure.

Earlier in his career, McMahon coached special teams for the Atlanta Falcons (2007-08), where his unit allowed just 49 punt return yards in a season, an NFL record. He also spent 11 seasons at Utah State (1995-2005) in roles ranging from special teams coach to defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator. McMahon began his coaching career at Carroll College (MT), his alma mater, and had stints coaching at the University of Louisville and Bozeman High School. A native of Helena, Montana, McMahon and his wife, Kim, have three children: Dawson, Emmett, and Quincy.
